Essay

This list of works consist of class assignments and home projects created anywhere from 2007 to this year.  I was able to narrow down the selection by choosing images that had remained favorites of mine for some time; either for aesthetic reasons or because I liked the concept.  Each project was a learning experience and an opportunity to improve my skill.
I would often start a project without an end in mind; the journey was gratifying, but the finished product was often unpredictable.  Practice and art classes helped me refine my interests by reinforcing the need for structure and critical analysis.  I understand more and more the importance of keeping an open mind when working on a design; it’s good to stand in someone else’s shoes to gain perspective on your own work.  One’s own taste will always impact design; however, learning to communicate with intention can make the work stronger.
Design is the art of manipulation.  We manipulate the way we see normal life; we strive to change the way we perceive it.  When an abstract thought is communicated through a strong image, the idea takes form.  Integrating symbols or using a strong sense of structure can be a good way to make a memorable design. Form is very important in this process.  However, intent gives form meaning.  Knowledge of art history is the key to being successfully intentional.  I have noticed more interesting concepts in my own work, the more I learn about the past.
Having gained valuable skills from art class, it is interesting to see how my work has changed in the past few years.  I still have many of the same stylistic preferences, but I've learned the importance of craftsmanship and professionalism.   I hope to learn more about creating effective designs and to learn how others did so throughout history.  I'd like to gain inspiration from the innovations of past artists and use that to create something positive.
